5-8

After a failed first match against ITA the reigning world champion was unable to improve its level of performance in the course of the tournament. The important matches against BAR (preliminary round) and CHN (QF) were also clearly lost 0:3 and the team ended up with on a disappointing rank 5-8.

General remarks

The team is composed of a mixture of older and younger players (seven players born 1984 or later) with the experienced attack players as the ones who still had most influen-ce on the play (comeback of Artamonova - Estes). But these players do not longer per-form on the same TOP level (best scorer ranking: Gamova - rank 18, Shaskova - rank 22).

Serve

Four players perform a controlled and in most cases straight line jump spin power services, there is one alternative with jump floats from differing positions. Floats that serve tactical purposes are in most cases performed with a flat trajectory of the ball.

Serve recpetion

Permanent serve reception with three players, good performance of the libero as well as of the serve reception players.

Basic reception (with frontal serve reception) is often applied, based on quick movements and good positioning of the players.

Set / Attack Complex 1 and Complex 2

Both setters prefer a similar playing style (No 12 in the starting line-up and No 18 as a substitution) showing a good timing of interaction with quick attackers and perform well in the typical Russian match approach with high setting for outside attacks (often also with underhand techniques).

Quick attack play in Complex I: Outside attack from position 4 is dominating with diagonal direction of the spike, often termination of 1st tempo attack from varied position behind the setter, in individual cases also as backcourt-attack (approx. 10%).

Attack play in Complex II: Backcourt-Attack: High attack from position 4 is dominating, in addition selected backcourt attacks; Freeball-attack: depending on the situation distribu-tion of the sets to all positions.

Block / Defense

No 11 Gamova rank 2 in individual block ranking. Compared to the WCh 2006 decrease in block performance (then 3,5 now 2,8 points per set) .

Depending on the actual situation block coverage (without covering the narrow area, net player not included into the block, combination of backcourt players on position 1 and 5).
