Olympic Games volleyball teams taking shape

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 14, 2012 – With just over two months to go before the start of the 2012 Olympic Games, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) can confirm which teams have qualified so far for men’s and women’s volleyball at the Olympic Games.

Following the completion of four out of five Continental Olympic Qualification Tournaments on Sunday, the men’s teams of Argentina, Italy and USA all qualified, while the Brazilian women’s team also booked a ticket to London on Sunday confirming eight of the 12 teams in both genders.

The remaining four vacancies will be filled for women (one to the best Asia team and three to the best non-Asian teams) at a joint Asia Continental and World Olympic Qualification Tournament, which will take place in Tokyo, Japan from May 19-27 while for men, two vacancies will be determined at a joint Asia Continental and World Olympic Qualification Tournament from June 1-9 with two more confirmed at two World Olympic Qualification Tournaments in Sofia, Bulgaria* and Berlin, Germany from June 8-10.

The last three vacancies will be filled at World Olympic Qualification Tournaments in Japan, Germany and Bulgaria* from June 1-9

* Sofia, Bulgaria have been confirmed as the new hosts of the World Olympic Qualification Tournament, replacing Verona after Italy qualified for the Olympic Games at the European Olympic Qualification Tournament on Sunday. Following the bid process held in 2010, all seven applicant countries were ranked in order of appraisal and since Bulgaria had placed third behind Italy and Germany, Sofia was confirmed as the new host following Italy’s qualification.
