Dutchmen hit stride to reach quarter-finals

Reinder Nummerdor (left) and Richard Schuil looked in good shape as they beat Swiss pair Jefferson Bellaguarda and Patrick Heuscher to reach the last eight

London, Great Britain, August 4, 2012 – Dutch duo Richard Schuil and Reinder Nummerdor made light work of reaching the quarter-finals at the London 2012 Olympic Games with a 21-20, 21-15 win over Athens 2004 bronze medallist Patrick Heuscher and Jefferson Bellaguarda.

In the first set the sides were evenly matched and the Swiss had set point at 20-19. However, the Dutch saved it and were then merciless when they had a set point of their own. A powerful Schuil spike gave them the opening set.

The second continued in the same vein as the first, but eventually the Dutch took control of the match and raced away to wrap up the victory with another Schuil spike.

“In the first set they played well, but the second set was pretty easy,” Schuil said. “Now we are playing the Italians (Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai) and they are playing well, so it will be a tough match.”

In the women’s tournament Italians Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti needed only two sets to see off the challenge of Spain’s Liliana Fernandez and Elsa Baquerizo.

In both sets the Italians raced into an early lead, before the Spaniards dragged themselves back into proceedings. However, both times Cicolari and Menegatti kept their composure and turned the match back in their favour to finish with a 21-15, 21-15 victory.

"We played very good,” Cicolari said. “We knew that we could win. We wanted to win and everyone could see that."

Menegatti added, "We played a quite perfect match and I hope to do just that the next game."
