Brazil and USA to take centre stage in third round of men's volleyball tournament

The many Brazilian fans in attendance at Earls Court hope on Thursday their heroes will take revenge for the defeat they suffered to USA in the last Olympic final

London, Great Britain, August 1, 2012 – With a perfect record of 2 wins each so far in the competition, Brazil and USA will play a rematch of the 2008 Olympic final in the third round of preliminary matches in the men’s volleyball tournament at Earls Court on Thursday, August 2. Still the program has much more to offer as the battle for a spot in the 1/4 finals promises to be extremely tough up to the very end of the pool play.

Serbia vs. Germany

After losing their opening match to USA, European champions Serbia easily beat Tunisia in their second. Aleksandar Atanasijevic was the match’s top scorer with 24 points. Germany lost their first two matches to Russia and USA. Despite showing glimpses of their best, a lack of consistency has ultimately cost them. Both world No.7 Serbia and world No.10 Germany need to win to have a chance of progressing to the quarterfinals.

Australia vs. Bulgaria

On the second day, Australia beat Great Britain in straight sets. Captain Igor Yudin led his team for their first victory at London 2012. Bulgaria provided the biggest surprise of the tournament so far beating Poland 3-1. Standout opposite player Tsvetan Sokolov scored 28 points in that game and he will be a similar threat to Australia.

Russia vs. Tunisia

Russia were beaten 3-0 by a powerful Brazil in their second match of the tournament as superstar Maxim Mikhaylov failed to have his usual impact. Tunisia lost both their matches at London 2012. However, Hichem Kaabi has been a shining light for the Africans in the matches with Brazil and Serbia but world No.2 Russia may be smarting after their loss to Brazil and out to regain their form.

Poland vs. Argentina

Both Poland and Argentina lost 3-1 in the second round of competition in Pool A against Bulgaria and Italy respectively. Poland’s opposite player Zbigniew Bartman and Argentina’s Facundo Conte should provide many highlights for their teams and create much of the story of this match. The result of this fixture between world No.3 Poland and world No.8 Argentina will go a long way to determining how teams progress to the quarterfinals from the group.

Brazil vs. USA

Brazil and USA will contribute for the match of the day on Thursday. Both sides enter the rematch of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games final in strong form, registering 3-0 wins in both of their matches so far. Matthew Anderson and Clayton Stanley have been in top-scoring form and should again receive great service from setter Donald Suxho. Murilo Endres played a big part in world No.1 Brazil dismantling Russia in their last match and is a player that USA will definitely need to shut down to eventually have the upper hand in the game.

Great Britain vs. Italy

Great Britain lost 3-0 to Australia in their last match and will be keen to put the disappointment of losing arguably their most winnable match behind them. It is unlikely to get better for Great Britain in their Olympic Games debut when they play world No.6 Italy.
Italy beat Argentina 3-1 in their most recent match with Michal Lasko scoring 18 points and Ivan Zaytsev squeezing in with 17 to control the match. A win for Italy will all but secure a position in the quarterfinals.
