The Olympic Games returns to London, UK for the first time since 1948 from July 27 to August 12, 2012 as the capital city prepares to host the four-yearly sporting extravaganza.

London is the UK's biggest city with a population of 7.5 million and lies on the River Thames in the south of the country.

The Romans were the first settlers in London just after the turn of the first centruy and since then the city has grown further, particularly in the last few hundred years when it became the industrial heartland of the UK.

However since then London has become more famous for its tourism. Famous for landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and The London Eye it is a popular favourite for travellers and areas such as Oxford Circus and Trafalgar Square are often busy with tourists.

The Olympic Village will be in the east of the city in Stratford, approximately 10 minutes to the center of town via the famous London Underground.

Horse Guards Parade

Horse Guards Parade lies at the heart of Whitehall, the political centre of the UK, in the borough of Westminster.

The square was a competition area of Whitehall Palace where the knights used to fight each other in battles show, during the reign of Henry VIII. Later, the immense parade grounds of this palatial facility was by soldiers in the 1700s to protect the monarchy. Today, the Queen's guards are changed at the top of Horse Guards Parade every hour.

 A temporary arena will be built for the Olympic beach volleyball competition for 15,000 spectators, with sand brought in to create London’s very own 'beach’.
