The 2012 Olympic Games Beach Volleyball test event, which will run from August 9-14, will be the first time an international beach volleyball tournament will be staged in the U.K. capital and will mark just under one year before the Olympic tournament begins.

This event is critical to test not only technical and functional aspects of the Beach Volleyball tournaments at the 2012 Olympic Games in London in the same location, but also to attract media attention to beach volleyball. Athletes participating in the event are given an opportunity to step in as advocates for our sport and contribute to the success of beach volleyball at the 2012 Olympic Games in London .

Visa FIVB Beach Volleyball International is an intercontinental women’s exhibition tournament and will welcome 24 teams which will be decided by the FIVB and LOCOG jointly and will follow the Olympic Games format. Each duo will be split into one of six pools containing four teams Through a round-robin format the two best teams of each pool, plus two best third ranked teams in the pools, will directly advance to the round of 16. The other two vacancies will be determined by Lucky Loser matches between the remaining four third ranked teams. A knock-out format will then follow through to the finals.

There will be a total of five courts – one centre court, two warm up courts and two training courts.

Entry Procedure

Entries are open as of now and will close on
June 9, 2011. National Federations can register their teams via the Beach Volleyball Information system (BVIS)

The final list of the 24 participating teams will be released on June 27, 2011.

Drawing of Lots

The drawing of lots to determine the pools' composition will take place during the Technical Meeting, the day before the start of the event on August 8, 2011.


Venue

Three courts (one centre court and two warm up courts) will be built to competition standard at the venue in Games-Time positions and will all have lighting for night matches. One warm up court will be used for a preliminary round match and a lucky loser match. Two training courts will also be available.

Team Participation

24 teams: to be decided by the FIVB and LOCOG jointly

Country Quota: two teams per NF*
* The FIVB and LOCOG reserve the right to expand this quota depending on the final entry list

Restrictions: The European Women's teams who are eligible to take part in the European Championships Final in Kristiansand, Norway (August 8-14,2011), are not eligible to enter the FIVB Beach Volleyball International

Points: This event will be held under the category of an Intercontinental Exhibition and the FIVB will not attribute any Ranking points and /or Bonus Pool participation.


Competition Format

The competition format will be the same as the Olympic Games.

Preliminary phase
August 9-11, 2011

24 teams will be competing in six pools, with four teams per pool played over three days. Through a round-robin format the two best teams of each pool, plus two best third ranked teams in the pools, will directly advance to the round of 16. The other two vacancies will be determined by Lucky Loser matches between the remaining four third ranked teams.

Final elimination phase
August 12-14, 2011

A knock-out format with 16 teams will be played over three days until four teams remain in play. The semifinals will be played between the four remaining teams. The final matches for 1st/2nd place will be played by the winning teams of the semifinals while the 3rd/4th place match will be played by the losing teams of the semifinals. The semifinal and final matches will be played on August 14, 2011.
