Maxim Mikhaylov began his professional career as an
outside hitter but soon became an opposite for the
Yaroslavich club. The 24-year-old became a young star in
his first season in the main Russian league and since 2007
he has constantly been a top scorer. He previously won the
FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship at the age of 17
and the CEV European Youth Championships at 18.
In 2008 coachVladimir Alekno invited him to join the senior
team and Mikhaylov soon became one of its brightest
stars becoming Russia’s best scorer as they collected the
full range of medals in the last three editions of the World
League. A lethal right arm and incredible jumping ability
saw Mikhaylov confirmed as the MVP as he led his side
to 2011 World League gold, an award he received again
when Russia qualified for the Olympics by winning the
World Cup at the end of last year.
Quiet and unassuming, it’s Mikhaylov’s steady nature
which has a calming influence on his team. As Russia’s
main attacking weapon, he regularly tops the scoring
charts.

Taras Khtey was born in the Ukraine and followed in his
father’s footsteps by becoming a professional volleyball
player. He joined Moscow outfit MGTU at 16 and went on
to win the Russian Championship in 2001.
He made his debut for Russia in 2002, winning an FIVB
World League gold medal, an FIVB World Championship
silver and an Olympic Games bronze in Athens 2004.
However, he was left out in the cold in 2006 before
returning to the side in 2010. Since then, he has shown
tremendous leadership qualities, guiding the young
Russian side to their first World League title in nine years
and a World Cup title and subsequent Olympic Games
qualification in 2011.
