FIVB President to CAVB: 'Credibility is the key to success'
Kigali, Rwanda, December 7, 2013 - During the opening ceremony of the 2013 CAVB Congress in Kigali, Rwanda on Saturday, FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° discussed the key to volleyball success around the world.
Credibility, he said, is the way to gain the confidence of sponsors and increase marketing of the sport.
In his message to the 48 National Federations attending the Congress, Graça discussed how he has started to develop FIVB's reputation as a credible organisation within the Olympic family, international bodies and the wider business community.
"We want to promote volleyball through traditional and digital media and ensure the continued growth of the game by developing exciting new event concepts to attract new fans, broadcasters and sponsors and also to provide revenue streams to national federations," he said.
"The first edition of the Continental Cup, which was the qualification process to the 2012 London Olympic Games helped to spread beach volleyball worldwide and developed the sport in many poor countries. We had 143 participating national federations through 71 tournaments in 54 organising countries. Africa had 43 countries which is a record in terms of participation. Before this competition we had only 31 countries participating in the FIVB World Tours, and thus we had more than four-times the increase in the national federations.
"Now, with the second edition of the FIVB Continental Cup, we had 175 countries participating in the big event, which really reflects its success."
Graça also discussed the successful 2014 World Championship qualification process, which was made possible through the financial support of the FIVB. A total of 155 national federations were registered to take part in the qualification process for the 2014 Men's World Championship in Poland – an increase of 42 countries from 2010. 141 countries registered to take part in the 2014 Women's World Championship in Italy, with 40 more teams taking part than in 2010.
