European giants Italy mercilessly crush pint-sized rivals in easy straight sets

 
Italy celebrate their comfortable 3-0 victory over Chinese Taipei.
Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, July 30, 2013 – World No.3 Italy ended their Pool D campaign in the Girls’ U18 World Championship on a high note following a scintillating one-sided 25-14 25-10 25-11 victory over underdogs Chinese Taipei at the Liptapanlop Hall on Tuesday.

Powerful Anna Nicoletti led Italy with 17 points. Anastasia Guerra led the 193cm-tall team-mate in the spiking skill with 14 points against Nicoletti’s 10, but Nicoletti produced a better form in serving skill to carry out four ace serves.

Italy, whose height average is 185cm against the Chinese Taipei’s 170cm, took the height advantage to attack aggressively at the net. The beginning of the opening set was a close battle. Both sides traded attacking and blocking which saw the score tied 5-5. However, Italy took command from then on attacking from every corner to wrap up the set without much trouble 25-14.

The following two sets turned out to be completely lop-sided affairs when Italy overwhelmed the smaller-built opponents with exceptional tactics and incredible height. Italy captured the second and third sets 25-10 25-11 and the effortless encounter.
