Idea Khonkaen to play Evergrande in quarterfinals of the Asian Women’s Club Championship
Idea Khonkaen, which also won this year’s Thailand National Games, have only won a single match in the one-week, eight-team tournament. After going down 2-3 to hosts Lienviet Postbank on Monday, the Thai team succumbed to a second defeat 1-3 in the hands of Taipei. On the last day of the round-robin preliminaries on Wednesday the team was beaten by Kazakhstan’s Zhetyssu in straight sets.
The Thai team, whose key players had sustained injuries, gathered for an intensive two-hour training session in preparation for Friday’s quarterfinals.
Idea Khonkaen’s head coach Banjong Sombat commented after the training, “Our training has focused on the first-ball reception and how to overcome the taller blockers.”
At the end of the pool round-robin preliminaries on Wednesday, winless Idea Khonkaen finished fourth in Pool A. As expected, Kazakhstan’s Zhetyssu top the pool with eight points from successive three wins. Lienviet Postbank of Vietnam came in second position with five points from two wins against one loss, with Taipei in third place with four points from one win against two losses.
Guangdong Evergrande, the only team not to lose a single set en route to the quarterfinals, led Pool B with nine points. Japan’s PFU Blue Cats had six points from two wins against one loss to come in second place. Bo Tong Gang finished third with three points from one win against two losses, while the Giti Pasand from Iran followed with three straight losses in the tournament.
In the Friday’s quarterfinals, Kazakhstan’s Zhetyssu take on Iran’s Giti Pasand, Thailand’s Idea Khonkaen wil play against Guangdong Evergrande of China, Japan’s PFU Blue Cats play Taipei of Chinese Taipei and Lienviet Postbank face against DPR Korea’s Bo Tong Gang.
The winning teams will make the cut for the Saturday’s semifinals to determine the first to fourth positions, with the defeated teams will play each other to determine the fifth to eight classification round. The eventual winners in this championship will represent Asia to compete in the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship to be held in October in Switzerland.
