NORCECA is proud of number of WCHs Qualifiers in 2012
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, February 5, 2013 – Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, president of NORCECA, has applauded the confederation's organisation of the sixteen first-round tournaments, which count towards the 2014 FIVB World Championships in Poland and Italy.
Calling it the ‘biggest achievement’ of the volleyball institution in the last year, Mr Marte Hoffiz said, “We feel very proud about attaining this huge goal as 64 teams took part in the first phase of qualification tournaments. That’s something we could not even imagine in the past.”
More than US$700,000 was invested in the eight women’s and men’s events that took place in 15 different countries across the four sub zones within the NORCECA region.
“As part of our development plan we started the qualification phase one year earlier than the rest of the confederations in order to present our national federations in categories 1 and 2 with more chances of competing,” said Marte Hoffiz.
Events were hosted in the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Curacao, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, French Saint Martin, Grenada, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Suriname and the US Virgin Islands.
The top three ranked teams advanced to the 2013 second-round tournaments from each of the four zonal tournaments, which included six events per gender (twelve in all).
“These tournaments left a valuable legacy in the host countries as we had the opportunity to organise workshops before the competitions and properly train the local people in the different aspects of running a volleyball event,” added the president.
The NORCECA confederation registered the participation of 40 countries (comprising 39 men’s teams and 38 women’s) in the qualification towards the World Championships in Poland and Italy in 2014.
“Development across NORCECA is our main goal and I really believe we took a major step in that direction with our record number of tournaments last year,” said Marte Hoffiz. “We are looking forward to an even greater success in 2013, with the support and leadership of the FIVB President, Dr. Ary Graça and all our national federations are anxiously waiting for the season to kick off,” he continued to say.
Many national teams have already started training with the support of NORCECA’s coaching programme.
