South American Girls' Youth Championship begins on Tuesday
Teams from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay will fight for the top prize and the three berths available for the 2013 FIVB Girls' U18 World Championship, which will take place in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
In the past 17 editions, Brazil took home 14 titles, Peru two and Argentina one.
In Pool A, hosts Peru line up with Chile, Colombia and Paraguay, while Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela and Uruguay will place against each other in pool B.
Brazil have won the title seven times in a row. In 2010, Argentina were second and Peru, third.
Argentina participated in the last World Championship in Turkey and Guillermo Cáceres’s team have been training hard for the tournament. They will play two warm-up matches prior to the tournament.
As coach of the host team, Natalia Malaga is likely to feel the most pressure but she is ready for the test.
“This is always a new challenge,” she noted. “Most of our players have previous tournament experience and know what it is to play in a full Coliseum. We trust them and know that they will give their best.”
