Kigali, Rwanda, December 8, 2013 -  Beach volleyball received special recognition at the CAVB Congress in Kigali on Sunday.

Beach volleyball has entered a special era in African volleyball since the implementation of the Continental Cup in 2010, which saw 43 countries take part in the qualification process for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

In her presentation to the Congress, CAVB Beach Volleyball Director Mrs May Alaa showed the dramatic increase in all aspects of the sport from the 2010 sub zonal and zonal phases of the Continental Cup to the Finals in Mauritius and Rwanda.

In this year’s age-group volleyball World Championships, Africa was represented by six teams in each age category while in beach volleyball the number of referees increased to 35 and included six women.

The zone presidents presented their activity reports, showing the competitions organised within their areas and also the development programme that were organised over the past two years after the CAVB increased the allocations to these zones and decentralised the activities.

Zone II President Mamadou Ndoye showed his zone’s web site and demonstrated the ways that it had improved communication between the different zonal confederations. The zone organised eight volleyball and beach volleyball competitions, which were all qualifying events for the World Championships. Four FIVB and two CAVB courses were organised in this zone in 2012 and 2013.

Zone III President David Kabre featured the activities of Africa’s most active zone. In total there were seven competitions organised at the club and national team level in addition to the FIVB and CAVB courses. He also showed the marketing activity for the zonal competitions.

Zone VI President Wilian Nhalpo spoke about the zone’s new headquarters in Lesotho that was opened in January 2012. The zone organised beach volleyball qualifiers for all the age group competitions and a successful 2014 World Championship qualification tournament.

Zone VII president Kaysee Teeroovengadum provided information on the four courses hosted in Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles in addition to the two big club championships.
