FIVB Executive Group meets with AVC leaders

The visit to the AVC was the first by the FIVB Executive Group

Beijing, China, May 13, 2011 - FIVB President Jizhong Wei and the FIVB Executive Group met with Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) leaders during a historic visit to the AVC headquarters on Friday.

In the first ever visit to a Confederation by the FIVB Executive Group – which consists of the FIVB President, first executive vice-president Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, second executive vice-president Theofanis Tsiokris and executive vice-president and treasurer Andre Meyer – President Wei indicated that it will be the first of many visits to FIVB confederations.

“Asia is the first continent the FIVB Executive Group has visited and will go to other continents to exchange experience and views directly so as to strengthen our direct communication with Continental Confederations to promote volleyball around the world,” President Wei said. “The FIVB now provides financial support through development projects to less-developed federations. The external help is of course necessary but we have to use the money correctly provided by the FIVB. The money is a public fund and must go into sport.

President Wei highlighted four key points during the meeting.

“All elected members of the FIVB and AVC as well as other continental confederations are volunteers who should never seek personal benefits from a public non-profit sports federation.

“Money coming from sport should be used correctly for sports with a transparent monitoring mechanism.

“Solidarity with a common goal is vital for the FIVB. All differences will be solved by mutual understanding and compromise in conformity with the FIVB Constitution.

“Continuation of the FIVB strategic policy and stability in organisation are guarantees for FIVB further development.”

AVC president Saleh Bin Nasser said: “We are very happy to have your (FIVB President's) visit to the AVC Headquarters. It shows how you are taking care of the AVC. This is a wonderful opportunity to use your experience and wisdom to promote Asian volleyball.”

The FIVB and AVC leaders also exchanged views on how to help national federations in Category I and II to raise their level.
