Lausanne, Switzerland, October 23, 2020 – The FIVB is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of CEV Honorary Member and former French Volleyball Federation President Jacques Shaw at the age of 87.

Shaw, a true volleyball enthusiast, led the French Volleyball Federation from 1999 to 2004, served as a member of the CEV Board of Administration from 2001 to 2011 and was also named a CEV Honorary Member in 2012. In his late years, Shaw’s deep love for volleyball was unwavering. In particular, he always made time to meet some of the players and officials he had mentored and supported throughout his career as a highly regarded sports official.

In 1983, Jacques Shaw was instrumental in the establishment of the National Volleyball Centre (CNVB) in Montpellier whose main hall currently bears his name. This leading training facility has helped to produce many French international players over the years, including many of the ‘Bleus’ due to compete at the re-scheduled Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Shaw was also the manager of the French national teams in his role as President of the French Volleyball Federation from 1999 to 2004. Under his tenure, France claimed its only FIVB World Championship medal to date, a bronze from the 2002 edition held in Argentina, and also took home silver at the 2003 European Championship.  In addition, Shaw was a key figure behind the establishment of the National Association of Volleyball Referees (ANAVB) in 2004.

The thoughts and sympathies of the FIVB and entire Volleyball Family are with Jacques Shaw’s family and friends, as well as the entire French volleyball community at this difficult time.
