FIVB mourns passing of Katsumi Wakao

Lausanne, Switzerland, May 26, 2020 – The FIVB is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Katsumi Wakao, who dedicated much of his life to promoting our beloved sport of volleyball.

A central figure within the Japan Volleyball Association (JVA), Wakao’s illustrious work in volleyball ranged from being an influential member of the FIVB Sports Events Council, to working as the senior advisor of the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC).

In addition, at the 2010 FIVB Women’s World Championship in Tokyo, an event that received outstanding support from Japanese fans, Wakao was recognised by the competition director for his tireless contribution to volleyball. His efforts and achievements within volleyball earned him the prestigious “Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays” Award from the former Japanese Emperor Akihito.

The FIVB and the global Volleyball Family extends its deepest condolences to Mr Katsumi Wakao’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
