President Wei's end of year message

FIVB President Jizhong Wei reflects on the many highlights for volleyball and beach volleyball in 2011
Lausanne, Switzerland, December 30, 2011 - With another new year ahead of us, I would like to take the opportunity to reflect on the past 12 months and take note of the many achievements we, the FIVB family, have accomplished.

There have been many positive highlights from 2011. The FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Championship was a great success as Rome put on a spectacular show. It was here that the FIVB launched its “Heroes” campaign, a new PR and marketing strategy designed to celebrate the stars of volleyball worldwide, which also continued at the World League and World Grand Prix Finals as well as at the World Cup.

The FIVB also made giant strides with its development program. The recent collaboration with the United Nations concerning humanitarian projects and their “We Can End Poverty Millennium Development Goals” is an example of the FIVB’s drive to grow both on and off the volleyball court. The launch of the FIVB Development Fund was also a huge success with a total of 79 applications from which 52 were approved totalling more than $2.6m. The breakdown includes 23 federations from Africa (43 per cent of their federations), 14 from Europe (25 per cent), 10 from Asia (15 per cent), four from South America (33 per cent) and one from NORCECA (one project which is organized by the confederation for all its member federations).

The FIVB’s increased collaboration with the International Olympic Committee is also a key factor, generating encouraging feedback from both within the family and outside while it is no secret that during my tenure as President I have championed the need for a closer relationship with the IOC and similar international sports organisations.

Therefore, I was heartened to see the efforts of the Burundi Volleyball Federation as they held their first Volleyball for Peace festival, a five-day training project, in collaboration with the Peace and Sport Organisation in December. There is no better way to sign off the year other than acknowledge further growth and progress.

I wish the entire volleyball family a very happy New Year and look forward to continuing our continued development for the betterment of volleyball.
