The ground breaking Beach Volleyball Continental Cup provided a new opportunity for countries to qualify for the Olympic Games, in addition to the 16 vacancies offered on the FIVB World Tour. The Continental Cup ran from 2010 to 2012 as a London Olympic Games qualifying event and included the FIVB World Cup Olympic Qualification in Moscow, Russia in June, 2012, which also qualified teams for the London Olympics. The tournament was played at the continental level (subzonal, zonal, final) and the five winners of the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup – one from each Continent – qualified for the Olympic Games. The Continental Cup cycle culminated with the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Final, which took place in Campinas, Brazil from May 29 to June 2, 2013. It was a double medal win for Brazil as Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego won the men’s competition and Maria Antonelli and Talita Da Rocha Antunes claimed the women's title. The next Continental Cup cycle will run from 2014 to 2016.
