Brazilian women capture 19th gold in South American Championship

Brazil earned their 19th gold medal at the South American Championship with their straight-set defeat of Peru in the final
Cartagena, Colombia, October 5, 2015 – The Brazilian women topped the podium and captured their 19th title in the South American Championship after they reigned 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-13) over Peru in the final, while hosts Colombia outlasted Argentina 3-2 (25-21, 26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 15-6) to take the bronze on Saturday.

In the final match, Brazilians Natalia Pereira and Gabriela (Gabi) Guimaraes recorded 15 and 11 points, respectively, while Peruvian Angela Leyva charted 11 markers.

Brazil showed some impressive serving power and efficient blocking throughout the competition that drove them to win their 19th gold medal in the tournament.

“This victory is important because it kept our dominance in the South American region,” Brazil coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes said. “It is one another achievement for the team but the most interesting part of this victory is that we performed as a team. We have been talking a lot about the future and there are only 307 days before the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Now, the players will return to their clubs but I am sure that they will keep working hard. When they come back in 2016, we wil have three months to prepare and make late adjustments for the Olympics.”

“Winning this tournament was very important for our team because we are already thinking about next year,” Gabi said. “I am very happy to come home with the title and the individual awards. The whole team did a fantastic job this season. We know we need to develop a few things and we will keep working hard to improve more and more to be at peak at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. We want to play with more speed and we are on the right track.”

Brazil will have try to achieve a challenging feat as they try to win another Olympic third consecutive gold medal at home. The Brazilians have won gold medals in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
