Matt Anderson will return to Zenit-Kazan after taking a break | Lausanne, Switzerland, December 26, 2014 – American Matt Anderson, who quit Russian team Zenit-Kazan in October, is set to play for the team again in the new year.
“I’m Back,” Anderson stated on the website. “After some great relaxation and time spent with my family over the Holiday’s, I have decided the best thing for me as a person and professional volleyball player is to return to competition. So, I am returning to Kazan, Russia on the 5th of January to begin training and preparation for the Champions League.”
According to media reports in Italy, Anderson is only planning to return to play in the Champions League.
“I want to thank Zenit-Kazan for understanding that I needed a break from competition and look forward to making another run at a Champions League Title,” he said on his website.
The 27-year-old outside hitter terminated his contract with Zenit in late October, citing depression and homesickness.
Anderson joined Zenit Kazan in 2012 and played two seasons for them. They won the Russian Championship in 2014, the Super Cup of Russia in 2013 and a bronze medal in the Champions League in 2013.
He was a key figure for the United States team that won gold at the World League Finals in Italy and also helped his team to a seventh-place finish at the Men’s World Championship Poland 2014.
When he quit the team, Anderson stressed that the move was his personal decision: “Everything here in Kazan has been always organised at the highest level. I decided to stop my career and this is entirely my decision. I just want to have a break.” Anderson has previously played professionally in Korea and Italy.
