It’s time for medal matches at IX Men’s Pan Am Cup
Tijuana, Mexico, August 16, 2014 – United States and Cuba are ready to battle for the gold medal of the Men’s Pan American Cup on Saturday night at Baja California High Performance Center in Tijuana.
In Friday’s semifinals, United States defeated a brave Puerto Rico 3-0 (28-26, 25-22, 26-24) while Cuba edged Argentina 3-2 (25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 15-13).
Zachary La Cavera led USA with a match-high 25 points, followed by Taylor Crabb who contributed 12 points in the victory. Maurice Torres finished with 13 points for Puerto Rico.
Rolando Cepeda and Javier Jimenez were the main offensive contributors in the Cuba’s victory piling up 26 and 23 points, respectively. Pablo Koukartsev topped Argentina with 15 points.
In a consolation match, Canada finished in seventh position after a five-set victory over Dominican Republic 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-13).
Bradley Gunter led Canada with 13 points followed by Dallas Soonias and Toontje Lankvelt each with 12 tallies. Dominican Jose Caceres had a match-high 22 points in the loss.
Puerto Rico will play Argentina for the bronze medal while Mexico will battle Venezuela for fifth place.
The Men’s Pan American Cup is a qualifier to the 2015 FIVB World League, offering five spots to the different groups of the annual competition.
