Trophy tour lands in Copacabana beach
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 16, 2014 – Copacabana Beach had a special attraction on Saturday, as the FIVB Volleyball World Championship trophies made an appearance at one of the most famous scenes in Brazil.
Two Brazilian volleyball idols – three-time world champion Gilberto "Giba" Godoy, and two-time Olympic champion Fabiana “Fabi” Alvim – helped showcase the trophies that the best volleyball teams in the world will battle for next month.
“I hope Brazil can bring this trophy home,” Giba said. “I would love to go to Poland to watch the games.”
Fabi, who recently announced she would retire from the women's team, also expressed her excitement for the upcoming tournaments.
"The trophy will go to Italy, but hopefully will be back in the hands of our team at the end,” she said. “This is a title that the Brazilian women's team do not have yet, but has every condition to win.”
Children from the VivaVôlei project, an initiative from Brazilian Volleyball Confederation, also joined in the festivities.
“I love talking with the children about the sport,” Fabi said. “I try to tell them a bit about life experiences, the importance of sports and their studies, as well as learn from them.”
The 35 children also got a chance to play volleyball with the athletes.
Next, the trophies head to Paris, France, before departing for the FIVB Volleyball World Championships in Italy and Poland. The trophy has already made stops in multiple cities, around Rome and Italy, as well as Brazil, USA and Serbia.
Twenty-four men’s and women’s teams will begin their battle for the trophy and the prestigious title. The FIVB Men’s World Championship Poland 2014, will take place from August 30 to September 21. The FIVB Women’s World Championship Italy 2014, will take place from September 23 to October 12.
