Puerto Rico and Cuba join semis of Pan American Cup

Tijuana, Mexico, August 15, 2014 – The semifinal matches of the IX Men’s Pan American Cup were defined following the victories of Puerto Rico and Cuba over Mexico and Venezuela, respectively, at the Baja California High Performance Center on Thursday.

Puerto Rico claimed a four-set win 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16) while Cuba advanced with a five-set victory 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 29-31, 15-6).

In Friday’s semifinals Cuba goes against Argentina and Puerto Rico meets United States.

Maurice Torres finished with 22 points and Mannix Roman scored 12 for Puerto Rico. Samuel Córdova was the top scorer for Mexico, with 13.

Javier Jimenez led five Cubans with double digits in the scoring sheet with 20 points. Rolando Cepeda was next with 18 while David Fiel added 15. Osmany Uriarte and Isbel Mesa contributed 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Venezuela’s Kevin Piñerúa had a match-high 23 points, including four aces, while Jesus Chourio and Hector Salerno had 12 and 11, respectively, in the losing cause.

In a consolation match for the 7 to 9 positions, Jose Caceres poured 26 points to lead the victory of Dominican Republic over Colombia 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-20, 25-21). Alexander Moreno had 18 for the losers.

The Men’s Pan American Cup is a qualifier to the 2015 FIVB World League, offering five spots to the different groups of the annual competition.
