USA and Argentina reach semifinals of Pan Am Cup

 
The United States outplayed Mexico in three close sets in front of a good crowd at Baja California High Performance Center on Wednesday night
Tijuana, Mexico, August 14, 2014 - United States and Argentina advanced to the semifinals of the Men’s Pan American Cup as the top two pool winners at the conclusion of the preliminary round at Baja California High Performance Center on Wednesday.

In Wednesday action, the USA won a tough first set against Mexico to take the match in straight sets 3-0 (31-29, 25-23, 25-23). It was their second straight-sets victory in Pool A, taking them to 10 points.

Argentina won an epic five-set battle against Canada 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 19-17) to finish with 8 points and a point-ratio of 1.082.

Cuba also totaled 8 points with a 2-0 mark following their 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23) victory over the Dominican Republic. Their point-ratio was 1.078.

In Thursday’s quarterfinals, Cuba meets Venezuela while Mexico play Puerto Rico. In the consolation eliminatory round for the 7-9 positions, the Dominican Republic will play Colombia.

The Men’s Pan American Cup is a qualifier to the 2015 FIVB World League, offering five spots to the different groups of the annual competition.


United States 3-0 Mexico
Taylor Crabb was the leader of the American offense with a total of 17 points, followed by Taylor Averill with 14. Captain Zachary La Cavera chipped in with 13 points in the victory. Daniel Vargas finished as the losers' top scorer with 15 points, while Carlos Guerra closed with 10 tallies.

Argentina 3-2 Canada
In a long five-set battle, Argentina edged Canada. Pablo Koukartsev was the leader on the Argentinean side with 19 points, followed by Rodrigo Villalba and Facundo Imhoff with 18 and 15 points respectively, while Gonzalo Quiroga added 10. For Canada, Dallas Soonias ended with 27 points, Toontje Van Lankvett had 16, Graham Vigrass 13 and Jason DeRocco had 10.

Cuba 3-0 Dominican Republic
Blocks and serves were the keys to Cuba's victory against the Dominican Republic. The team coached by Rodolfo Sanchez had a 9-3 blocking advantage and converted 5 aces against none for the Dominicans. Cuban Captain Rolando Cepeda had 16 points, followed by Osmany Uriarte and Javier Jiménez Scull with 12 and 10 points. Jose Caceres had a match-high 20 points for the defeated side.
