Cuba win gold medal in NORCECA U21

 
Cuban players celebrate winning the NORCECA U21 Men's Continental Championship for the fifth time in El Salvador on Sunday night
San Salvador, El Salvador, August 3, 2014 – Cuba won their fifth crown in the history of the NORCECA Men’s U21 Continental Championship with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-21, 25-21) victory over Canada at Palacio de los Deportes of San Salvador on Sunday night.

Both finalists had already secured the two tickets reserved for the NORCECA Confederation to next year’s FIVB World Championship in Mexico.

Cuba claimed their first title in 2000 and won three consecutive editions of the biennial tournament in 2004, 2006 and 2008. The United States team, which finished third this time, had won the last two competitions.

Osmany Uriarte and Abrahan Alfonso were the top offensive weapons of Cuba producing 20 and 15 points, respectively.
 
Osniel Rendon contributed 10 tallies. Blake Scheenrhorn led Canada with 11 points while Ryan Nickifor and Jeffrey Ardon had 9 and 8 points respectively in the losing effort.

In the match for the bronze medal, the United States defeated Puerto Rico 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 27-25) with the difference being the better blocking of the Americans.

Storm Faagata-Tufuga led the United States in scoring with 13 points, including 4 blocks. Benjamin Plaisted added 12 points, including 3 blocks. Jon Rivera led the scorers of Puerto Rico with 13 points. 

In the match for fifth place, El Salvador overcame Barbados 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22) with Samuel Valdez contributing 28 points in the victory.
