Thais topple Serbia, Turkey roll over USA in World Grand Prix

The Thai team celebrate with their many fans in Korea after defeating Serbia in the World Grand Prix
Lausanne, Switzerland, August 2, 2014 – After a day on which the losing teams in the FIVB World Grand Prix could only manage three sets, things were a lot tighter on Saturday with a couple of upsets in Group 1 as Thailand defeated last year’s bronze medallists Serbia and Turkey overcame former champions USA, both in five-set matches.

Also in Group 1, Kim Yeon-Koung powered Korea to third place in the standings with another dominant performance, collecting 25 points and five aces – for the second day in a row – in the 3-1 victory over Germany. A day after beating China, Brazil turned on the power once again to defeat hosts Italy 3-0. In other games, Russia defeated Japan 3-1 and China rolled past the Dominican Republic 3-0.

In Group 2, the Netherlands remained undefeated but had to fight hard to overcome local rivals Belgium 3-2, while Puerto Rico picked up a famous victory as they overcame Poland in four sets and moved up to second in the standings.

In Group 3, the Czech Republic (15 points) and Croatia (12 points) have qualified for the Final Four, along with hosts Bulgaria (13 points). The remaining berth in the Final Four will be determined on Sunday and will go to either Kazakhstan (nine points) or Kenya (seven points).

Key points:

Serbia scored a tournament-high 21 blocks against Thailand but still ended up losing their match in Korea.
Brazil’s win was their seventh in a row over Italy.
USA, Germany, Japan and the Dominican Republic remain winless in Group 1.
Canada picked up their first win in Group 2, beating Argentina in five sets and leaving Cuba as the only winless team in the group.
Losing teams in all matches on Saturday picked up a total of 13 sets compared with just three on Friday.
There will be 14 more matches on Sunday.
