Talking Stats: USA reach third World League final; Brazil get chance to add more silverware

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 19, 2014 – USA reached the final of the FIVB Volleyball World League for the third time in history, while Brazil got a strong build-up to improve their medal count of nine gold, four silver and four bronze, making them the most successful team at the premier annual men’s competition.

Brazil and USA progressed to the final after finishing second in their Final Round pool. Both teams made impressive finishes by defeating their respective opponents in straight sets, which is the first time since 2012 that the semifinals were decided in straight sets.

Statistical Review – Day 4 – World League Finals

- USA have been to the finals twice when they took the top podium in 2008 and second place in 2012.

- USA have won three of their last four matches in the World League.

- USA leaped high to improve in rank in successive seasons after a 12th place finish last season.

- USA showed excellent defence as there were no Iranian player who scored more than 10 points in the match.

- Brazil made a repeat of their London 2012 Olympic Games performance by beating Italy in straight sets in the semifinal match.

- The last time Brazil beat Italy in straight sets in the World League was in the 2001 final.

- Italy have lost by a big margin to Brazil on the first set 25-21, the last time they lost a World League set with a big margin was in 2005, when they were defeated by the Bulgarians 25-10.

Italy suffered their second straight set defeat this World League season.
