Brazil beat Italy to keep Group 1 Finals hopes alive

Ivan Zaytsev’s game high 30 points was the eighth highest score of this year’s World League
Lausanne, Switzerland, July 3, 2014 – A 22-point haul from Wallace kept Brazil’s FIVB Volleyball World League Group 1 Finals hopes alive after the nine-time champions managed to overcome the “Italian Tsar” Ivan Zaytsev and his game high 30 points, with a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19) win over Italy in Bologna on Thursday.

Key Points
•    With one more match to play against Italy in Milan on Sunday, the victory puts Brazil on 14 points, three ahead of Poland, who play Iran at home on Friday and Saturday. Both teams are contesting the last Pool A ticket to Florence.

•    Win is Brazil’s 13th in 26 World League encounters against Italy. Previous two meetings were won 3-1 by Italy, which took place in in the first week of the 2014 World League. Last seven meetings between Brazil and Italy have been completed in four sets.

•    After winning their first six matches, Italy have now lost five World League matches in a row for the first time in team history - two against Poland and Iran and now one against Brazil.

•    Ivan Zaytsev’s game high 30 points was the eighth highest score of this year’s World League. China’s Yuan Zhi leads the way after scoring 37 against Cuba in last weekend’s Group 3 Finals.

•    Brazil, who are the three-time defending world champions, and Italy are the most successful countries in the World League with nine and eight titles respectively.

•    As the hosts of the FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 Group 1 Finals in Florence from July 16-20, Italy automatically qualify for the Final Six. Group 1 Finals will also consist of the top two teams from Pool A and B and the winner of the FIVB Volleyball World League Group 2 Finals in Sydney.

•   Iran has already qualified from Pool A for FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 Group 1 Finals in Florence. USA, Russia and Serbia all in contention for the two Florence vacancies from Pool B.

•     Fifteen matches left to play over this, the last weekend of the FIVB Volleyball World League 2014 Intercontinental Round, including three on Friday.

•    The winners of Pool C and E will join hosts Australia and Pool D winners France in the Group 2 Finals, due to be held in Sydney from July 12-13.
