Dominican Republic, Mexico and Guatemala join winners’ club
San Jose, Costa Rica, June 26, 2014 - The second day of actions of the Girls’ U-18 Continental NORCECA Championship concluded with Dominican Republic, Mexico and Guatemala joining the winners’ club on Wednesday.
The Dominican and Mexican sides scored overwhelming victories over St. Lucia and Honduras, respectively, to be confirmed as solid contenders for the title and the tickets to the 2015 FIVB Word Championship.
Guatemala battled to win over Trinidad & Tobago and Thursday’s final match against hosts Costa Rica will determine Pool A first place.
Also featuring on Thursday’s schedule are the decisive first place matches of United States and Mexico in Pool B while Dominican Republic faces Puerto Rico in Pool C.
The two highest ranked pool winners get automatic passes to the semifinals while the lowest ranked of the three will play in the quarterfinals with the second placed teams.
Dominican Republic 3, St. Lucia 0
Dominican Republic stormed past St. Lucia 3-0 (25-4, 25-2, 25-4) in their debut. The winners held a huge advantage of 39-2 in attacks and 14-0 in service points, showing superiority over St. Lucia who now has a 0-2 win-loss record in Pool C. Dominican Republic won relied on the performance of opposite Massiel Matos who contributed 14 points, including 11 kills and 3 aces, and outside hitter Natalia Martinez who added 13 points, all in kills.
Guatemala 3, Trinidad & Tobago 0
Guatemala opened with a straight set victory 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 over Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday. In their debut, Guatemala was challenged by a tough Trinidad & Tobago who maintained the score very close and even took the lead on several occasions during the Pool A match. It was the second loss for the Trinidadians, who also lost to Costa Rica on Tuesday. Guatemala dominated Trinidad & Tobago with a wide 12-1 margin in services points, while the losers weren’t able to take advantage of their better blocking performance by 7-0. Topping Guatemala’s scorers was middle blocker Maria Garcia who tallied 11 points and outside hitter Maria Alarcon with 10 points. On Trinidad & Tobago’s side, outside hitter Reann Young led with 12 points.
Mexico 3, Honduras 0
Mexico blanked Honduras by 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-7) in their debut in Pool B in the closing match of day two. Mexico’s first appearance definitely showed their intentions to battle for one of the three spots available for the World Championship as they are strong candidates to reach the finals here in San Jose. Mexico out-blocked Honduras 7-1; they held a 13-2 margin in aces and a huge advantage in attacks by 32-7. They committed 14 errors while Honduras made 23. Outside hitter Kathya Garcia scored 15 points for the winning cause, with 5 aces included. Mexico used all their players as their offensive line was unstoppable by Honduras.
