Carolina to host big volleyball events in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico will have the home court advantage for the second time as they try to qualify to the Men's World Championship in Poland
Carolina, Puerto Rico, June 16, 2014 – The city of Carolina, close to the capital San Juan, is becoming a favourite site for international volleyball events in Puerto Rico as two big competitions have been announced to take place next July.

The revamped Guillermo Angulo Coliseum will host the NORCECA Men’s Final Playoff towards the FIVB World Championship from July 16-19 with squads hailing from Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Puerto Rico preparing to battle for the last spot available to the 24-team competition in several cities of Poland.

The four teams finished in second place at the third-round NORCECA Qualification Tournaments held in Canada, Cuba, United States and Puerto Rico last month.

Hosts Puerto Rico suffered a stunning defeat to the hands of Mexico in straight sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) at home in Ponce.

“Once again we welcome the support of the city of Carolina and its Major Jose Carlos Aponte Dalmau to organize volleyball events in Puerto Rico,” Nelson Perez Cruz, president of the National Federation announced on Monday. “The popularity of volleyball in Carolina guarantees sold out crowds every day as it has been in the past.”

In the weekend following the men’s competition, Carolina will host also the FIVB World Grand Prix from July 25-27 with the participation of teams from Argentina, Cuba, Netherlands and Puerto Rico.

“It will be like a volleyball festival for two weeks and what better place than our best volleyball hosts Carolina,” Perez Cruz said.
