Iran score shock upset against Brazil in World League

Farhad Gaemi of Iran celebrates Saturday's win over Brazil in the World League
Lausanne, Switzerland, June 7, 2014 – Iran stunned Brazil 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-22) in their second duel in Pool A in the FIVB Volleyball World League on Saturday at Sao Paulo’s Ibirapuera Gymnasium. Brazil dropped to 2-4, while Iran picked up their first win of the tournament.

“It was a wonderful match for us,” Iran captain Mir Saied Marouflakrani said. “This is the first time that Iran has won against Brazil in Brazilian territory.”

Iranian opposite Shahram Mahmoudi top-scored again with 18 points, while no Brazil player reached double figures. Brazil, who were runners-up in the World League last year, also failed to score a single service point.

“We have to recognise that Iran played a good match and Brazil played at a lower level,” Brazil coach Bernardo Rezende said. “We could not keep our consistency throughout the match and our defence did not work well. Now we have to work harder and take the responsibility.”

In Pool B, Serbia cruised past Bulgaria 3-0 (28-26, 25-18, 25-13) in Sofia to maintain their 100 per cent record with their third straight win. Bulgaria, who finished fourth last year, are now 0-3 and face an uphill struggle to qualify for the Finals in Florence. In the other Pool B game on Saturday, USA rolled over Russia 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-17) in Long Beach to go 4-0, while the Olympic and World League champions dropped to 0-4.

In Pool C, Australia took its first ever victory in the FIVB Volleyball World League at the expense of Finland with a 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 15-12) victory. Australia’s Edgar Thomas scored a tournament-leading 32 points. Australia captain Aidan Zingel commented: “We didn't exactly make it easy, but we made it exciting for the fans. To make everything work and to dig deep and bring it all together, it was just exciting to be on the court.” Australia improved to 1-2 as Finland suffered their third straight loss.

Pool D leaders France won their fifth match out of five, defeating Germany in convincing style 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-22) in Stuttgart, Germany, with Antonin Rouzier leading all scorers with 21 points. Germany dropped to 3-2.

In Pool E, the Netherlands won a tough five-setter (25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25, 16-14) over Portugal to improve to 2-1. The Netherlands’ Robin Overbeeke topped all scorers in the match with 28 points. Portugal fell to 1-2.

In the second round of matches in Pools F and G, Mexico won en epic battle against Turkey 3-2 (23-25, 31-29, 16-25, 27-25, 19-17) while Cuba beat Tunisia 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21) for the second day running. China overcame Spain 3-0 (31-29, 25-18, 25-13) in Puerto Rico and Puerto Rico edged Slovakia 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 15-10).
