The Czech Republic dominate Korea in World League Pool E five-set thriller

Filip Habr sets up an attack for the Czech team in their five-set victory against Korea
Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, June 5, 2014 - The third week of the FIVB Volleyball World League started today with the first of two Pool E matches this weekend between the Czech Republic and Korea at the Budvar Arena in Ceske Budejovice.

All four teams in Pool E were level on three points after the action on week two. The Czech Republic played Portugal twice last week, losing the first game on Saturday, before earning a straight-sets win on Sunday. Korea also lost the first of their two games against the Netherlands, before winning the second.

Today’s match between the Czech Republic and Korea was the first encounter between the two countries in the World League. The two teams battled it out in five sets. The Koreans took the first set 33-31. The Czech Republic claimed the next two sets, before the Koreans fought back 28-26 in the fourth. The decisive fifth, however, went to the European side, who clinched the decider 20-18.

The Czech Republic went into the match having won their four games against Asian opposition in the World League, all against Japan in 2003, and can now add this victory to their tally.

The match against Korea was the Czech Republic’s 20th in the World League, taking their record to 12 wins in the competition. Coach Zdenek Smejkal's team will play Korea again tomorrow at 15.50, before taking on the Netherlands next week. Other highlights of tomorrow’s week three World League action include matches between Brazil and Iran in Pool A and USA and Russia in Pool B.
