Nicaragua and Dominicans go for the ticket in Pool P

Nicaraguans celebrate their well fought victory over Guadeloupe to clinch a berth in the finals of Pool P
La Romana, Dominican Republic, May 16, 2014 – Nicaragua and hosts Dominican Republic will battle for the pass to the 24-team FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship in Italy when the two sides clash on Sunday at Eleoncio Mercedes Coliseum.

The two squads, both with 2-0 mark, have secured the crucial 1-2 positions at the end of the preliminary round and are scheduled to meet also on Saturday in what should be a warm-up preview to the decisive contest.

Nicaragua booked a spot in the finals of Pool P with a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15) victory over Guadeloupe on Friday and the Dominicans cruised to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-12) win against El Salvador.

Heidy Traña collected 15 points to lead Nicaragua, followed by Amalia Hernandez and Helen Traña with 10 points apiece. Guadeloupe’s Isabelle Acina and Lauranne Meslier de Rocan each scored 12 points.

For second day in a row Gina Mambru led the Dominican offense with 13 points, including four aces. Brayelin Martinez, Erasma Moreno and Marianne Fersola charted 9, 8 and 7 points, respectively, in the victory.

The home team held advantages of 7-2 in both the blocking and aces charts. Candida Arias was the top blocker in the contest with four.

“The match was a little bit complicated in the early going because we were facing an unknown opponent,” Nicaragua’s Captain Claudia Noguera said. “They have good blocking and defend well. For us it is a big success just securing a place in the fourth round of playoffs.”

“Volleyball is a passion not an obligation, that’s the way I play the game,” Mambru said afterwards. “I love to play and even more when you are in front of your fans. I think we put a good show of volleyball for them.”
