The Dominican Republic and Nicaragua victorious in NORCECA Women’s Pool P

 
The Dominican Republic's Gina Mambru led the victory over Guadeloupe with 14 points
La Romana, Dominican Republic, May 15, 2014 - The Dominican Republic and Nicaragua blanked their opponents in the first day of action in Pool P of the NORCECA Qualification Tournament towards the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championships in Italy.

The Dominican Republic team brushed aside Guadeloupe 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-16) following the victory of Nicaragua over El Salvador 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-13) at Eleoncio Mercedes Coliseum on Wednesday.

Gina Mambru scored 14 points for the Dominican Republic, including two aces. Teammates Marianne Fersola and Brayelin Martínez scored six points each. 

The Dominicans outserved their opponents 7-0 but trailed 5-4 in the blocking category. The Guadeloupe team made 32 unforced errors to 19 by the winners.

In the other game, Florelisa Smith led Nicaragua's attack with 10 points. Siblings Helen and Heidy Traña contributed 8 points apiece. Amalia Hernandez and Claudia Noguera both added seven points to the win.

The winners held advantages of 7-1 in the blocking skill and 9-6 in aces. Lolette Rodriguez and Noguera each recorded three aces.

Bethania de la Cruz, captain of the Dominican Republic team said: “We feel very glad with the victory, especially with the support from the fans. It was a relatively easy win.”

Nicaragua captain Claudia Noguera said: “We took the first step and hope to get better results. Now we have to prepare for the match against Guadeloupe.”
