Russia’s Belogorie Belgorod win FIVB Men’s Club World Championship title

Belgorod's captain Taras Khtey joins his teammates to share the cup of FIVB Men's Club World Championship
Belo Horizonte, Brazil, May 10, 2014 – In a superb finale, Belogorie Belgorod from Russia became the winners of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Belo Horizonte, after playing an amazing volleyball match against Qatar’s Al-Rayyan.

UPCN from Argentina also edged home team Sada Cruzeiro to complete the podium in third place.

After coming to Brazil as European champions, Belgorod celebrated another title in a great tournament, nailing five straight wins, and all of them in four sets. For their final 3-1 (16-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-15) win, the Russian side found success with help from György Grozer and MVP Dmitriy Muserskiy, both with 18 points apiece.

Gennady Shipulin, Belgorod coach, was completely ecstatic after the win.

“We are a great team," he said. "We are a family. We wanted to win this title, I myself wanted it very much. We all played an amazing game today, all the team gave everything for this."

Meanwhile, despite the defeat, Al-Rayyan coach Igor Arbutina was also happy.

“This is a historical achievement for Qatar’s volleyball and also for the entire region," he said. "Today we lost against a much better team; Belogorie was just too good for us. They’re the strongest team of the world now.”

Before the final match, UPCN reached their best result ever, as they achieved an unforgettable bronze medal over home team Sada Cruzeiro. In their third five-setter of the tournament, the Argentinean side prevailed 3-2 (25-17, 31-29, 23-25, 16-25, 15-13).

The game was a thrilling battle, with each team seizing their momentum. The fifth set was a completely different history, as the game stayed close until the decisive block by UPCN. Opposites Theo Lopes and Wallace De Souza topped the charts with 22 points each, while UPCN also enjoyed the performances of Bogdan Olteanu (18) and Martín Ramos (15), who blocked together for the final point.

“I still can't believe this. Many things come to my mind, from my very first moments at volleyball," said Demián González, trying to hold back some tears of joy after the game. “We know that some teams are way better than us, including Sada Cruzeiro. They have an amazing team, but we really wanted this.”
