Macerata claim third title in Italian national league

Lube Banca Marche Macerata are celebrating winning the 2013/14 Italian national
championship after their victory away to Sir Safety Perugia 1-3 (25-22, 22-25,
Macerata finished the Italian season with an impressive record of 18 victories
in 22 matches. The finals with Perugia got started with two tie-breaks. Both teams pulled off victories before Macerata moved up a gear to take the
third round 3:0. The fourth and final round of the championship series yesterday was
attended by FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° and ended with an
extraordinary fourth set which both teams could have won.
Inspired by their captain Goran Vujevic, Perugia started the match well, winning the first set 25-22. Macerata improved
their game, however, to win the next three. Hitters Jiri Kovar and
Bartosz Kurek were particularly impressive and the whole team limited unforced errors to put additional pressure on their opponents. The game’s final and most spectacular set stretched to 33-35.
Serbian middle blocker Marko Podrascanin said: "We proved to everyone that we are a great group and a
great team, winning the most important trophy. The title of MVP goes to the
Macerata’s victory against Perugia means they have now won their third
Scudetto, after those claimed in 2006 and 2012. Macerata and Perugia will be joined by Copra Elior Piacenza to represent
Italy in the 2015 edition of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League.
