Macerata claim third title in Italian national league

Macerata celebrate winning the Italian national league for the third time

Perugia, Italy, May 5, 2014 - Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata are celebrating winning the 2013/14 Italian national championship after their victory away to Sir Safety Perugia 1-3 (25-22, 22-25, 21-25, 33-35).

Macerata finished the Italian season with an impressive record of 18 victories in 22 matches.
The finals with Perugia got started with two tie-breaks. Both teams pulled off victories before Macerata moved up a gear to take the third round 3:0. The fourth and final round of the championship series yesterday was attended by FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça F° and ended with an extraordinary fourth set which both teams could have won.

Inspired by their captain Goran Vujevic, Perugia started the match well, winning the first set 25-22. Macerata improved their game, however, to win the next three. Hitters Jiri Kovar and Bartosz Kurek were particularly impressive and the whole team limited unforced errors to put additional pressure on their opponents. The game’s final and most spectacular set stretched to 33-35.

Serbian middle blocker
Marko Podrascanin said: "We proved to everyone that we are a great group and a great team, winning the most important trophy. The title of MVP goes to the whole team."

Macerata’s victory against Perugia means they have now won their third Scudetto, after those claimed in 2006 and 2012.
Macerata and Perugia will be joined by Copra Elior Piacenza to represent Italy in the 2015 edition of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League.
