GSP a new guest with big dreams at Women's Club World championship

GSP celebrating the 2014 African Club Championship title

Zurich, Switzerland, May 5, 2014 - Algeria setter Fatma Okazi once again earned glory for her country after she led her club GS Petroliers to win the 24th edition of the Women's African Club Championship, which concluded in Carthage, Tunisia last Sunday.

She now looks forward to leading her team in the FIVB Women's Club World Championship due to start in Zurich on May 7.

Okazi earned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) title in the African Championship and was the key factor in her club's victory, putting Algeria on the list of Women's African Club champions for the first time since 2000. With her focus of attention now on the world class competition, she wants to achieve a new set of goals at that level.

GSP will be the first Algerian club to compete at the prestigious FIVB event after Kenya Prisons represented Africa following the re-starting of the competition in the last four years. GSP coach Salim Achouri chose the same line up that captured the African title except for two players Asma Djebar and Nesrine Merouane who were sitting their colleague final exams and were replaced by the youngsters Djennaoui Lilia and Sara Belhocine. Safia Boukhima is among the experienced stars in the squad (she was chosen as the best receiver in the last African Club Championship) as is outside national team hitter Zohra Bensalim.

GSP will play in Pool A of the eighth edition of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship Zurich 2014, which features six teams split across two pools and will take place in the Saalsporthalle from May 7 to 11.

Molico Osasco and Hisamitsu Springs open the tournament with a Pool B match at 17:30 local time (15:30 GMT) before Volero Zurich take on SESI-SP in a Pool A game at 20:00 (18:00 GMT). GSP’s opening match will be against Volero Zurich on May 8 at 20:00 (18:00 GMT).
