Heynen announces Germany’s 22 players for 2014 World League

After qualifying for the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship Poland 2014 last January, Germany are preparing to take on the 2014 World League starting in about four weeks
Frankfurt, Germany, April 30, 2014 - Germany’s head coach Vital Heynen just released the names of the 22 players that he will count on for the upcoming start of the 2014 FIVB World League where Germany is set to play Japan, France and Argentina in the Intercontinental Round. Heynen has called up a good share of the players that last January booked Germany’s ticket to the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship Poland 2014 but will also provide some young guys with an opportunity to display their skills and potential.

Germany will start their campaign by hosting Japan on May 23-24 in Bamberg, before another two home rounds with France and Argentina follow on June 7-8 and 20-21 in Stuttgart and Berlin respectively.

Heynen won’t be able to count on experienced setter Simon Tischer, who spent the 2013/2014 season in Lyon, France. Tischer underwent surgery on both knees earlier this week: “I have been plagued by injuries for the whole season and never really got this problem sorted,” he says. “After consulting the medical staff I decided to undergo surgery since this would be a long-term solution and will enable me to play Volleyball for another few years and to do so pain-free. It is quite understandably a pity that because of this surgery I will be missing most of the summer season with the national team.”

Georg Grozer – who just ended the Russian Superleague in third place and will be playing at the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in Belo Horizonte with Belogorie BELGOROD – and Sebastian Schwarz (Generali UNTERHACHING) will also miss World League action this year as they want to enjoy a break and spend some time with their families after a long and very exhausting club season. “They will be back once we start our preparations for the World Championship,” Heynen announces.

The absence of some veterans will turn into an opportunity for young players who still haven’t represented Germany in international matches. These are Marvin Prolingheuer (TV Ingersoll BÜHL), Jan Zimmermann (VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN), Merten Krüger (VSG COBURG/Grub), Ruben Schott (BERLIN Recycling Volleys), Moritz Reichert (Volleyball School Frankfurt), and Jaromir Zachrich (evivo DÜREN).

“This year we will be pursuing the same goal we had set for the last edition of the World League,” Heynen says. “We want to provide players like Zimmermann and Prolingheuer with an opportunity to gain experience and show what they are capable of. They deserve this even more taking into consideration what they have shown throughout this season. On the other hand, we also want to win. At the end we will see if our strategy will be good enough to achieve that second goal.”

The 22 players nominated by coach Heynen are:

Setters: Lukas Kampa (Casa MODENA/ITA), Sebastian Kühner (BERLIN Recycling Volleys), Jan Zimmermann (VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN), Merten Krüger (VSG COBURG/Grub)

Opposites: Jochen Schöps (Asseco Resovia RZESZOW/POL), Simon Hirsch (Generali UNTERHACHING), Marvin Prolingheuer (TV Ingersoll BÜHL)

Wing-spikers: Denis Kaliberda (Copra Elior PIACENZA/ITA), Christian Fromm (Altotevere CITTA‘ DI CASTELLO/ITA), Björn Höhne (TV Ingersoll BÜHL), Tom Strohbach (Generali UNTERHACHING), Dirk Westphal (Czerni RADOM/POL), Ruben Schott (BERLIN Recycling Volleys), Moritz Reichert (Volleyball School Frankfurt)

Middle-blockers: Marcus Böhme (Generali UNTERHACHING), Tim Broshog (MOERSER SC), Philipp Collin (TOURS VB/FRA), Michael Andrei (SAINT-NAZAIRE/FRA), Jaromir Zachrich and Georg Klein (evivo DÜREN)

Liberos: Ferdinand Tille (Generali UNTERHACHING), Markus Steuerwald (PARIS Volley/FRA)
