Poland will begin their bid for this year's World League title in the second weekend of the tournament when they take on Brazil in their first match of the tournament

Warsaw, Poland, April 17, 2014 – With the start of the FIVB Volleyball World League just around the corner, the Poland Volleyball Federation announced its national men’s team lineup for the 2014 season.

Middle-blockers: Piotr Nowakowski, Marcin Mozdzonek, Lukasz Wisniewski, Karol Klos, Lukasz Perlowski, Andrzej Wrona, Piotr Hain

Liberos: Pawel Zatorski, Damian Wojtaszek, Krzysztof Ignaczak

The Poland men’s national team are hoping to improve on their disappointing eleventh place finish at last year’s edition of the FIVB World League. It was a come down after their first ever World League title win in 2012, which followed on from a bronze medal win at the 2011 edition of the tournament.

The pressure is on for the hosts of this year’s much awaited FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, scheduled to take place from August 30 to September 21. But Poland are well placed to succeed being a country that boasts a strong volleyball tradition.

Its national team has stood out among the world’s elite teams since their appearance at the first FIVB World Championship in 1949 in Czechoslovakia. The fourth-place result from that tournament was repeated in France (1956) and again in Brazil (1960) with a gold medal triumph at the FIVB World Championship in Mexico in 1974. More recently, they took the silver medal at the 2006 FIVB World Championships.

The country has a stellar record at the European Championships, where they have been silver medallists five times in a row (1975-83), winning gold in 2009 and then bronze in the 2011 edition. The country’s success in 2011 also included a silver medal at the FIVB World Cup.

Poland won the gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and reached the quarterfinals of the 2004 Olympic Games. At the last Olympics, held in London in 2012, Poland finished in joint fifth place with the US.

Taking them through this important year is former French international Stéphane Antiga who the Poland Volleyball Federation announced as the new coach of its men’s national team in October 2013. Antiga has signed up to coach the team for the next three years, though he will continue to play for Poland’s multiple champions PGE Skra Belchatow up to the end of the current season.

As they head into the 2014 World League season, which is scheduled to begin on May 23, Poland (WR 5) get set to take on world No. 1 and nine-time World League champions Brazil along with eight time winners Italy (WR 3) and the rapidly improving Iran (WR 12).
