Guaynabo Mets join FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship line up

Guanabo's players celebrate after their five-set victory over Arrecibo to claim the title of the Puerto Rican Men's Volleyball Superior League

Lausanne, Switzerland, March 26, 2014 – Guaynabo Mets will be the NORCECA representative at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Belo Horizonte, Brazil from May 5 to 10 as announced by the National Federation of Puerto Rico on Wednesday.

This will be the fourth time that a team from Puerto Rico will take part in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship.

Puerto Rico’s Changos Naranjito were part of the eight team line up in the third edition of the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in 1991 which took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  Plataneros of Corozal took part in the Championship in Treviso, Italy in 1992 and more recently in Qatar, Doha in the 2009 edition of the tournament.

Guaynabo Mets is the fourth of eight teams currently qualified to take part in this year’s FIVB Men’s Club World Championship event, which will take place at the inspirational Mineirinho Arena, in Belo Horizonte city.

They now join the continental champions from Europe, Belogorie Belgorod of Russia as well as the defending champions, host country club and winner of the South American Men’s Club Championship Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro. UPCN of Argentina also qualified for the event as runner-up of the South American Men’s Club Championship.

This year’s tournament will also comprise the Continental Champion teams from Africa and Asia. The African continent is just a few days away from naming their champion with the men’s African qualifiers currently underway in Sousse, Tunisia. Manila, Philippines will host the 2014 Men’s Asian Club Championship from April 8 to 16, where one of the 18 participating teams will also secure a ticket to the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship.

The participation of two teams – jointly decided by the FIVB and the organisers – will complete the line-up of clubs taking part in the Championship.

In February 2014 Puerto Rico’s Guaynabo Mets beat the Arecibo Captains to take the championship title in the Great Kia Final Series of the Puerto Rican Men’s Superior League 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 26-24, 24-26, 15-12).
