Zhejiang New Century Tourism win Chinese Women's Volleyball League for first time

Zhejiang New Century Tourism stand atop the podium for the first time in the Chinese Women's Volleyball League

Beijing, China, March 24, 2014 – A new national champion emerged in Chinese women’s volleyball when Zhejiang New Century Tourism defeated defending champion Tianjin’s Bank of Bohai 2-1 in the best of three final series.

With their win, Zhejiang New Century Tourism climbed to the top of the podium at the 2013-2014 Chinese Volleyball League (CVL) that concluded in Jiashan in the Zhejiang province on Sunday.

The Bank of Bohai team, who has won the championship nine times, had to contend with the second place and Bayi (army) with third. Guangdong Evergrande, led by legendary coach Lang Ping, who won the bronze medal at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship last year, finished only fourth.

Zhejiang New Century Tourism is the sixth club to take the Chinese Volleyball League (CVL) title since the women's professional volleyball league started in China in 1996 after Tianjin Bank of Bohai (nine titles), Shanghai Cable TV (five), Guangdong Evergrande (one), Liaoning China Mobile (one) and Bayi Bosideng (one).

Zhejiang New Century Tourism came from two sets down to beat Tianjin in the first match and later levelled the match scores 1-1 with a 3-1 win over their rivals in the second encounter.

The crucial third match went the same as the first. Tianjin, facing local volleyball fans, played excellent volleyball to clinch the first two sets, taking them only one step away from their tenth national title. However, the Zhejiang girls fought back strongly with a never-give-up fighting spirit, taking the last three sets in a row to grab the Chinese Women’s National League championship for the first time in the CVL’s 17 year history.

Wu Sheng, head coach of Zhejiang, expressed his great joy at winning the championship saying, “I am especially satisfied with my players’ fighting spirit. During the match, though lagging behind two sets, they never gave up and played with determination.”

He added that, “I hope more and more strong teams will appear in the league and new champions will emerge each year, which will contribute a lot to the Chinese women’s volleyball.’

Wang Baoquan, head coach of Tianjin, said after the third match that poor attacking was the main reason for losing in addition to many errors, adding that ”Our players are old and it is very urgent for us to develop young players, especially wing spikers.”
