New Zealand kicks off National Secondary Schools Volleyball Championships

 
Large crowds attend opening ceremony of New Zealand's Secondary Schools Championships

Palmerston North, New Zealand, March 24, 2014 –The 46th edition of Volleyball New Zealand's National Secondary Schools Championships opened last night at Arena Manawatu in Palmerston North, with a colourful ceremony attended by about 2,500 players and spectators.

Volleyball New Zealand President, Jock Murley and Palmerston North Mayor, Jono Naylor welcomed the athletes, with entertainment provided by the Riverdale Primary School's Kapa Haka group, the International Pacific College Drummers, and the Dean McKerras Dance Group.

Over the five days of the event, 652 matches will be played on 19 courts, with podium place getters found in nine different grades. 

In early section matches, title favourites Otumoetai College girls and Western Heights boys both won in straight sets.

The New Zealand Secondary School Volleyball Championships, which is being held in Palmerston North, draws 145 teams and over 2,000 players and officials and is considered one of the largest team sporting events in the country.

In all, nine divisions will be contested comprising five in the girls' competition and four in the boys'.
