Egypt claim their eighth World Championship ticket in style
Nairobi, Kenya, February 10, 2014 – At the end of
the five nation tournament on Monday, Egypt clinched the 2014 World
Championship ticket following their victory over Cape Verde 3-0 (25-14, 25-14,
Egypt achieved their first victory of the tournament after beating Kenya 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20) and went on to beat Zambia 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-15) before recording their third win of the tournament with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-9) victory against Botswana.
Egypt has qualified for the fifth time in row for the prestigious FIVB event and the eighth in total after 1974, 1978, 1986, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010. The team finished in first position with a win-loss ratio of 4-0 followed by Kenya standing at 3-1. Botswana ended their campaign in third position with 2-2 record while Cape Verde finished fourth (1-3) ahead of Zambia (0-4).
Saleh Youssef, captain of the Egypt team said: “The tournament was favourable on our side and we expected to qualify for the World Championships.”
The remaining two African slots for the 2014 Men's
World Championship will be filled following the completion of two more qualification
tournaments to be held in Cameroon and Tunisia.
The women’s contest for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Italy 2014 will start in Kenya as Nairobi welcomes Seychelles, Uganda, Tunisia, Senegal, Mozambique and Cape Verde in Pool U from February 16 to 23.
The conclusion of tournament in Kenya tournament will pave the way for the next qualification round that will see Algeria host Botswana, Ghana, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Egypt in Pool T from February 23 to March 2. Africa will be represented by two women’s teams in the World Championships to be held from September 23 to October 12.
