Kenya's team set for FIVB Men's World Championship Qualifiers
Nairobi, Kenya, February 4, 2014 – Kenya’s 12-man squad is set to compete at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships African Qualifiers Pool “U” on Thursday.
Kenya will face African champions Egypt, Cape Verde, Botswana and Zambia at the Moi International Sports Center, for a ticket to the most prestigious event in men’s international volleyball behind the Olympics: the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships 2014 Poland.
Kenya’s team will consist of: Daniel Kiptoo, Elisha Aliwa (setters); Saul Wafula, Wesley Rono, Sila Makiso (center); Dennis Mokua, Cornelius Kiplagat, Michael Chemos (right) and Bernard Musumba, James Ontere, Philip Maiyo (right) and John Ndung’u (libero).
Libero Ndung’u, who plays for M-Roma of Italy is a new edition to the team. Maiyo is the captain, assisted by Aliwa.
Head coach Gideon Chenje announced the squad after morning training at Safaricom Indoor Arena Monday.
Participating teams are preparing to head to Kenya, after putting in the final efforts of preparation.
Botswana had a successful camp in Algeria last week, where they played the Algerian team who are preparing for the Pool “T” qualifier in Cameroon, Feb. 12-18.
Six-time African champions, Egypt, are already in Nairobi in attempts to acclimate to the city’s weather, which stands 2000 m above sea level. The team will be without two main icons: setter Abdalla Mohamed and opposite Ahmed Salah, who failed to be released from the Turkish clubs.
The FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championships 2014 Poland will take place August 30 to September 21.
