Barij Essence leads Iran men's volleyball super league
At the end of the home round games, which is half of the current season of the men’s super league, Barij Esseance team from Kashan led with 27 points, while Mizan Khorasan team from the city of Mashad came in second with 23 points. Matin of Varmin ranked third with 22 points.
"We are very happy that we have got the champion title of the super league, during the first half of the season," said Mostafa Karkhaneh, head coach of Barij Essence. "We are determined to work hard and take first place once again in the second half. We had a good performance against other powerful teams.
"Each year, Iran volleyball is gaining momentum. We are looking forward to the second half of the super league games."
A total of 12 teams participated in the season.
Paykan, Tehran’s most prestigious team - 11-time champion title in super league of Iran, bronze medalist of the 2010 World Club Championship and 7-time champion of the Asian Men’s Club Championship - came in at fourth place with 18 points.
"Teams preformed exciting gamed this year so forecasting results was not probable and easy,“ said Paykan head coach Peyman Akbari. „We hope that we will show our good performance in the upcoming round. Our main aim is to enter the playoffs."
The first round matches were held in Tehran, Mashad, Zahedan, Gonbad and Bandar ABBAS. Fans filled many of the stadiums, and watched the matches on large outdoor screens at sold-out venues.
"Recent progress in international level volleyball has attracted a huge number of young and older generations toward our beloved sport of volleyball," said Iran Volleyball Federation president Dr. Davarzani. "These fans are a precious asset for our sport.
"We are not limited volleyball to the metropolitan city of Tehran, we are taking it to third degree cities and we are proud of it."
The second round of games begins January 5, and will last through February 12. The second round consists of 66 matches in 11 weeks. Following the second round, the top eight teams will enter the playoffs to determine who will represent Iran at the Asian Club Championships in Manilla, Philippines from April 8-16, 2014.
