Vasileva breaks world record by scoring 57 points in Korean national league

Vasileva was the top scorer for her country earlier this year and seventh overall as Bulgaria debuted in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix 2013

Sofia, Bulgaria, December 21, 2013 - Bulgaria’s Elitsa Vasileva broke the record for the most points scored by a female player in a match by registering 57 points in a Korean national league game for her team the Heungkuk Pink Spiders against Expressway on Thursday.

The 23-year-old, born in Dupnitsa who spent a few seasons in Italy (from 2007 through 2012) before moving to Brazil first and then to Korea for the current season, broke the previous world record held by American Nicole Fawcett who had registered 55 points in another game of the Korean league played earlier this year.

Vasileva – who was a member of the Bulgarian national team that finished ninth on debut in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix 2013 and won bronze at this year’s European League Finals in Varna – led the Heungkuk Pink Spiders to a 3-2 victory over Expressway (22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 20-25, 15-13) thereby scoring more points than all of her teammates combined together (they totaled 50).

Vasileva, who was Bulgaria's best scorer in the World Grand Prix
, will now return home to join forces with her national team and try to qualify for the 2014 FIVB Volleyball World Championship Italy 2014 via the third round qualifier scheduled for January 3-5 where Bulgaria will host in Varna the national teams of Slovakia, Belarus, and the Czech Republic.
