Argentina wins Boys' South American U17 Championship

Argentina celebrates new title

Saquarema, Brazil, December 7, 2013 – Argentina Volleyball experienced a historical moment on Saturday, when the Under-Age Boy's National team defeated Brazil in a tie break match to win the gold medal at the second edition of the South American Championship.

The Argentine men, coached by Julian Alvarez, came from behind as Brazil took the first two sets on their home court, 25-17, and 25-22. In the third set, however, Argentina came ahead to win 16-25.

Brazil got the lead in the fourth set, 8-7, 11-9, but Argentina came back in the do-or-die contest to tie the set 13-13. From there on, both teams had match points until Argentina caught Brazil off-guard to close the set 17-19.

Argentina's win adds a new gold medal to the previous one won by the juniors' in 2008, along with two youth titles in 2008 and 2010.

Even with Brazil's 2-1 record in the competition's preliminary round, leaving Argentina in the second ranked place, prior to the competition both teams played two friendly matches, won by Argentina 3-0 and 2-1. The win was a great achievement for the young team, making Argentina very proud of winning the new title at the international competition.
