Impressive 56-54 set score at Korean V-League match

Seoul, Korea, November 28, 2013 – Korean League volleyball has never been more interesting than when players from the Incheon Korean Air Jumbos Volleyball Club and their rivals Rush & Cash Vespid reached an impressive third set score of 56-54 in Tuesday’s V-League match.

If it kept the Korean League players on their toes, fans in the stadium were no doubt at the edge of their seats as the action took place on the court.

While the Air Jumbos kept control of the match from the very beginning taking the first and second set 25-22 and 25-23, the opposing team proved they were not willing to let go of victory, easily. With every play taking the point score higher and higher, the Air Jumbos had to work double time to secure their two point advantage in the third set. The 56-54 final set score eventually earned them victory in the V-League match.

Of note was Cuban born Michael Sanchez, who scored 41 points for the Air Jumbos in the third set alone. He was helped along by team mate Youngsoo Shin who scored 14 points and Gwakseungseok who took 11 points for his side.

High set scores of the kind, though a rare occurrence in volleyball, are not uncommon.

In a match between Canada and Brazil in the preliminary round of the World League in 1999, the second set ended with a score of 42-44 in Brazil’s favour. The teams went on to play another three sets with Canada eventually taking the match 3-2 (26-24, 42-44, 25-18, 16-25, 19-17).

Then in 2011, having dropped their first match of the FIVB Men’s World Cup against Russia, Italy won three straight sets against a tough USA squad in an epic battle, which saw the highest scoring set (41-39) in men’s World Cup history go down in the first frame. When the dust settled, Italy were the victors in a hard fought 3-1 win (41-39, 25-22, 22-25, 25-21).
