Brazil still unbeaten, USA and Japan gain momentum

Americans celebrate their five-set victory over Russia on Friday at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium
Tokyo, Japan, November 15, 2013 – Brazil defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19) to remain undefeated after three outings in the FIVB Women’s Grand Champions Cup.

The Brazilians have 9 points to go with their 3-0 record, while the Dominicans fell to 1-2 and three points.

Veteran Sheilla Castro poured 20 points to lead the winning offense, followed by Natalia Pereira and Fe Garay each with 13 points. Dominican Bethania De la Cruz had a match-high 21 points for the defeated side while Prisilla Rivera added 13.

It was the 15th victory without losses for Brazil against Dominican Republic in lifetime head-to-head meetings.

“The match was really tough because our playing styles are very similar,” Brazilian coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes said. “I am happy about winning 3-1.”

In the other matches of Friday, United States edged Russia in five sets (16-15, 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 15-13) and Japan defeated Thailand 3-0 (25-20, 29-27, 25-22).

Jordan Larson-Burbach led USA with 23 points followed by Nicole Fawcett with 15. Russia’s Natalia Malykh and Liubov Shashkova had 26 and 23, respectively, in the losing effort.

The USA improved to 2-1 win-loss record with five points, while Russia is now at 1-2 with four points. Japan elevated their mark to 2-1 with six points and Thailand remained winless and without points.

“It was a really nice effort from every one of our athletes,” USA’s coach Karch Kiraly stated. “All twelve players made a nice contribution.”

Saori Kimura and Saori Sakoda spearheaded Japan’s attack with 18 and 15 points, respectively, while Yuki Ishii an Risa Shinnabe each contributed 11 points in the win. Onuma Sittirak and Wilavan Apinyapong had 14 apiece for Thailand.

It was the 10th victory against two losses for Japan in their lifetime head-to-head FIVB matches with Thailand.

“Today, we served better to make it more difficult for them to make combinations,” Japan’s coach Masayoshi Manabe said. “Also we reduced the speed of our setting, but that’s something we’re still working on.”
