Volero Zurich make strong start at Women’s Club World Champs

In front of 2,000 excited supporters in Zurich's Saalsporthalle, host Volero Zurich made an excellent debut at 2013 FIVB Women's Club World Championship.

Zurich, Switzerland, October 10, 2013 – Volero Zurich and Vakifbank Istanbul won their duels on the second competition day of the 2013 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship in Zurich, Switzerland. Vakifbank Istanbul swept Iowa Ice in straight sets 25-16, 25-12, 25-17 before hosts Volero Zurich proved too strong for China’s Guangdong Evergrande (26-24, 25-21, 29-31, 25-21).

Host Volero Zurich started their first FIVB Women’s Club World Championship campaign with an impressive 3-1 win versus Asian champions Guangdong Evergrande. In front of 2,000 thrilled spectators, Jan de Brandt’s team overpowered the stars from China with a remarkable performance.

Best scorer of the match was Volero Zurich’s Kenia Carcaces with 28 points. Ting Zhu contributed 25 points for Guangdong Evergrande. The host kept the upper hand in blocking with 14 winners to 7 on China’s side. With 6-1 aces, the local players were also the better servers on Thursday night.

Volero Zurich coach Jan de Brandt: “I am very happy with tonight’s game. We had the chance to win 3-0 but temporarily lost focus in the third set. We made less pressure from the serving line and experienced some problems with the well-timed tips from the Chinese spikers. Anyway, it is a good start.”

Volero Zurich captain Nneka Onyejekwe: “It was a tough game tonight with two strong teams. We committed too many mistakes in the third set. China put more pressure on our defense. However, the final result counts.”

In Thursday’s first match, women’s CEV champions Vakifbank Istanbul opened their 2013 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Champs campaign with a straight-set win (25-16, 25-12, 25-17) over Iowa Ice from the United States of America. It was the second defeat for the US-players who have to pack their packs after the Preliminary Phase.

Best scorer of the match was Istanbul’s captain Kirdar Sonsirma Gözde with 11 points. Andrea Justine Landi helped her side with ten winners. Vakifbank Istanbul booked ten block kills and six aces while Iowa Ice only had two (1/1).

Vakifbank Istanbul coach Giovanni Guidetti: “We fulfilled our duty today and played well. I could substitute some players what will be very important for the whole tournament as we have to play four games in four days. Tomorrow we’ll take on Unilever Volei. It will be an important test for our team. Unilever Volei has tall players and good middle-blockers. That’s the reason why we have to pay attention.”

Vakifbank Istanbul captain Gözde Kirdar Sonsirma: “We played well today. We made full use of our individual quality. The game of tomorrow against Unilever Volei will be very hard for us. They’ve got good players as for example Pavan, Gabi or Fofão, who has a lot of experience at her disposal. But I think that there is more quality in our team.”

The competition resumes on Friday with Kenya Prisons taking on host Volero Zurich (17:30 local time) before Unilever Volei challenge Vakifbank Istanbul (20:30).
